Coming Events 2011: April/May 125th Anniversary - South Australia The South Australian Union will be celebrating their 125th anniversary in April/May 2011 and plans are underway for a very special event attended by the President of the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Miss Sarah Ward of USA. It is a time of great significance and a time of remembrance. Remembrance of special past leaders such as Mrs Elizabeth Webb Nicholls who spearheaded the campaign for women's suffrage in South Australia and successfully achieved this goal in 1894. She was a Methodist laywoman with great talents but also great convictions and a desire that her life should be of benefit to those around her. She wrote, while still in her teens,"I long to have the will and the power to be very useful" Elizabeth was certainly very useful as a Foundation Member of the Adelaide Hospital and other positions but above all she was the longest serving WCTU President being in office as National President 1894 - 1903 and then President of SA 1889-1897, and 1906 - 1927. She was sometimes treated with scorn by the press and even the clergy but she firmly believed in the equality of the sexes and that women could "contribute in whatever way they chose" to society. Above all she was greatly loved and revered by members. She died at the age of 93 in 1943. ANOTHER 125th Anniversary - Queensland This will be celebrated in Queensland in the next few months with luncheons planned in Brisbane and Bundaberg. Other details are still being planned but please contact National Office 03 9654 6491 for an invitation or further information. 2013: World Convention - South Australia Details of the venue for this convention will be forthcoming. Plan to attend in 2013 as Australia hosts the 39th World Convention. |
